This was take on Václavské náměstí in Prague where I was born and where my family is from. A great spot for a typical tourist photograph, right?

Except that, in most tourist spots in this magical city, there is some intense history.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The spot where I stand is where, in 1969, Jan Palach set himself on fire to protest the Soviet invasion.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A month later, another student, Jan Zajíc, burned himself to death in the same place.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Palach wrote a letter that demanded the abolition of censorship and a halt to the distribution of Zprávy, the official newspaper of the Soviet occupying forces.

I’m fascinated by history. Remember, history can repeat itself unless we remember & learn from the past.
